John's
Gospel

Chap 2

The Story of Jesus

Jesus' First Sign

Now on the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee, and Jesus’ mother was there.  Jesus and His disciples were also invited to the wedding.

When they ran short of wine, Jesus’ mother said to Him, “They have no wine!”

But Jesus said to her, “Woman, what has this to do with Me?  My time has not yet come.”

His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He tells you, you do it.”

Now six stone water jars were standing there for the Judean rites of purification.  Each held twenty or thirty gallons.

Jesus said to them, “Fill the water pots with water.” And they filled them up to the brim.

Then He told them, “Now draw out and take some to the table master.”  And they took it.

But when the table master tasted the water that had become wine (he did not know where it came from, but the servants who had drawn the water knew), he called the bridegroom and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first and then the poor wine, after guests have had plenty to drink.  But you’ve kept the good wine until now.”

Jesus did this, the first of His signs, in Cana of Galilee, and made His magnificence known.  And His disciples believed in Him.

After this He went down to Capernaum with His mother and brothers, and His disciples.  And they stayed there a few days.

Cleansing the Temple

Now the Judean Passover celebration was approaching, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.  There in the temple He found people selling cows, sheep, and doves.  Moneychangers were also set up.  So when He had made a whip out of cords, He drove them all out of the temple area, along with the sheep and cows.  And He poured out the coins of the money-exchangers, and knocked their tables over.

And He told the ones selling doves, “Take these things away!  Do not make My Father’s house into a marketplace!”  And His disciples remembered that it was written in Scripture, “Zeal for Your house has consumed Me.”

The Judeans then said to Him, “What sign will You show us, since You do these things?”

Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”

The Judeans then said, “This temple has taken forty-six years to build!  And will You raise it up in three days?”

But He was talking about the temple of His body.  Then, when He rose from the dead, His disciples remembered that He had said this, and they believed the Scripture and the statement Jesus had made.

And many believed in His Name during the Passover, while He was at the celebration in Jerusalem, for they saw His signs, the things He did.  But Jesus did not trust Himself to them because He knows all men, and needs no one to testify about mankind, for He Himself knows what is in human nature.
